Character overview

Detective Bernard first appears in the episode "Burn Card" as an Internal Affairs detective, investigating a shooting in which Detective Ed Green is involved. Green is cleared of all charges, but subsequently leaves the precinct; Bernard subsequently replaces him as the partner of Detective Cyrus Lupo, who was promoted to senior partner. Bernard's detective shield number is 1954.

Bernard had not joined IA willingly, but was told that he could try for a transfer to Homicide after a two-year tour of duty. He does not like dogs, due to his nickname in Catholic school, "Saint Bernard".[1] In the episodes "Bogeyman", "Rumble", "Promote This!" and "Boy Gone Astray" Bernard mentions growing up in Compton, an urban city adjacent to Los Angeles. He is a practicing Catholic and in the episode "Rapture" he says that he does not believe in the Rapture. He is also a pro-life, as revealed in the episode "Dignity". In the season 19 episode "Promote This" he says that he understands the anger toward illegal immigrants, as jobs in Compton went to them for the cheaper labor they were willing to work for. In season 20 it is revealed that he and a woman who was at the academy at the time produced a son together whom he does not see, as the woman married her eventual fiancé and the boy believes that it is this man who is his father.
